Music Video Review
Avenged Sevenfold - "Retrovertigo"
Written by: Lexie
New tracks are exciting, but sometimes revisiting a classic is just as satisfying! Avenged Sevenfold have given us a new music video for their cover of the 1999 track, "Retrovertigo" by Mr. Bungle.
The song is about being consumed by materialism, particularly as a result of fame and fortune. Avenged Sevenfold chooses to accompany this track with harsh scenes of abuse and distress -- further darkening the song's overall theme. The overall mood and tone is dark and disturbed, demonstrating the kind of negativity that comes with greed and corruption. To balance the harsh imagery, we also get glimpses of the band performing live, which adds a bit of allure to the dark nature of the video.
While preserving the haunting nature and grunge style of the original, Avenged Sevenfold makes their own version distinctive by adding a bit more edge with heavy instrumentals. While this version clearly differs from the original, Avenged Sevenfold has made it a point to still encompass the signature sound of the 90s. I'd easily rate this overall piece a 10 out of 10 -- so whether you are familiar with the original version of this track or not, definitely give it a listen!
