MUSIC VIDEO/SONG REVIEW
"This Could Be Heartbreak" by The Amity Affliction
Written by: Abbey
Today, The Amity Affliction released both an exclusive stream of their new single “This Could Be Heartbreak” and a music video to go along with it. The release was in anticipation for their fifth studio album, “This Could Be Heartbreak,” due out on August 12th.
The music video starts out with lead singer, Joel Birch, seemingly dead inside of a coffin. Ahren Stringer, vocalist and bassist, is seen walking away from the graveyard and headed to a bar. He begins to drink his pain away, which is high ironic when taking into consideration the theme of the song. As the video continues, you see flashbacks to the coffin where Birch is desperately trying to escape and save himself. This is metaphor for saving yourself from your demons and problems you face now. The rest of the band joins together to race back to the graveyard and rescue Joel themselves, but find him already dead. This is symbolic for having a support system behind you, which becomes relevant to the themes as well.
The lyrics touch on the theme of suicide, heartbreak, and the emotional destruction of yourself but also the people around you. Joel suffered greatly from depression and alcoholism, coming close to death on the 2013 Warped Tour. He had stayed sober for a while, but as the band grew bigger, he grew weaker and again relapsed. This is referenced in one of the lines, “I can’t believe that my past always comes back to haunt me.” In the bridge you begin to hear the desperation in his voice, as he explains the destruction and hurt he’s causing all those who deeply care for him. This is absolutely heartbreak, and you can feel it in both the words and the video. The band also wants you to know that there are people there for you, and people going through the same things as you, so you are never alone.
Overall the music video is intriguing and eye opening with insight into letting your demons win and how the ones who love you are affected by self destructive behavior. The song and video are both excellently done, giving it a solid 8/10. You can head over now to their website now to pre-order “This Could Be Heartbreak!"
