LIVE SHOW REVIEW
JD & The Straight Shot
Written by: Miguel
Hailing from New York, the Americana band, JD & The Straight Shot, tagged along with well renowned musician, Don Henley, for a few shows around the U.S. which ended in Hollywood, FL at Hard Rock Live on January 25th. The entire show sold out so JD & The Straight Shot had to prove themselves to the audience since most were there for Don Henley.
As the lights shined onto the band, the crowd started clapping and cheering. JD & The Straight Shot started the show by telling the audience that they'll be performing songs that are mostly from their latest album, “Ballyhoo!”, followed by some of their older songs. They stuck to that and began playing “Glide”, and it captivated the audience immediately. The acoustic guitars along with the violin, resonated throughout the venue and the vocals by both frontman James Dolan and violinist Erin Slaver, created a perfect harmony that will be unforgettable. With a show this big, it takes a lot of talent to entertain the entire audience, and JD & The Straight Shot managed to do so easily.
They performed other hit songs from “Ballyhoo!” such as “Perdition”, and it even got some fans singing along. There wasn't much stage presence from the band but you can't expect much from the genre, however, the music was enough to keep the crowd entertained. The lighting was simple but that is expected since they were the opening band. The colours were able to set the mood of the songs perfectly.
Whether or not you're a fan of the genre or band, you cannot deny that their music is soothing and peaceful to listen to. Whether it is the vocals, guitars, or violins, they managed to to keep your attention one way or another. JD & The Straight Shot is currently working on their new album that’s due later this year, so be on the lookout for that. Don’t forget to also pick up “Ballyhoo!” on iTunes!
